On 29th June, 2017, in Room A716 of the New Main Building, Professor Satish Ukkusuri, from Purdue University, was invited to make a lecture on “Resilience of Cities : Complexity, Social Networks and Interdependence”. The lecture was hosted by professor TIAN Qiong and more than 20 people attended, including professors and students from School of Economics and Management, Beihang university.

Modern communities have developed nested complex socio-technological networks. Social networks and physical infrastructure networks are interdependent. Function of one network is dependent on the function of another network. Professor Satish pointed that there are two types of failure on flow-based networks: structural failure and functional failure. Based on dual mapping, he talked about traffic congestion and its evolution process on road networks. He also discussed innovative network science modeling approaches for understanding the recovery of cities. Finally, he introduced social media data analytics of which data from Hurricane Sandy is used as a test case to show the intersection of social and physical infrastructure factors in the resilience of urban areas. His research gives a new way to understand and model congestion evolution on road networks, as well as a unified way to model network structure and function.

After the lecture, professor Satish conducted further discussions with the audience.
