Abstract:While construction materializing infrastructure, housing, and building to support urban development, italso generates vast construction waste materials.

This presents a looming crisis to devour our invaluable landfill space, damage the natural environment, and even trigger natural disasters such as landslide. Yet

construction waste management (CWM) can be challenging. For example, it is difficult to handle individual’s illegal dumping behaviours, a criminal offence generally referring to intentional and illegal abandonment of household or industry waste materials on public or private property. It needs to explore effective ways for CWM.

In recent years, big data has often appeared on the radar, often advocated as a “silver bullet” to tackle many construction waste management issues. In the talk, the speaker will show how open big data can be used for CWM. First, the speaker will briefly introduce CWM and big data. Case studies will be presented later to demonstrate how big data analytics can help identify illegal dumping and other CWM issues, e.g., understanding waste generation rates and performance benchmarking.Based on the cases, the speaker will further discuss the challenges and possibilities of harnessing big data for CWM.
