At 14:00 on March 24, 2021, Professor Zhiyuan Liuat Southeast University was invited to give a lecture on the topic of "Data-driven traffic flow model based on Gaussian process" via a video conference held by Professor Tian-Liang Liu. About40 teachers and students participated in the video conference and discussed the study with thelecturer.
Classical traffic flow theories attempt to study the laws of road traffic flow operation and evolution through physical models, but such methods have certain shortcomings and cannot effectively use massive amounts of valuable traffic big data information. In order to accurately estimate the basic parameter relationships in traffic flow, Professor Liu's group proposed a new data-driven traffic flow model. The model is highly extensible and can use multi-source traffic big data to consider higher-dimensional traffic state variables (demand-side variables) and the impact of road supply conditions on the traffic state (supply-side variables). Furthermore, modeling the statistical relationship between them does not rely on the assumption of equilibrium; using machine learning models to replace traditional parameter modelswould improve the accuracy of traffic flow analysis. Professor Liu's group uses Gaussian process (GP) regression as the basic model to learn the basic relationship from demand-side variables and supply-side variables to traffic flow, andcosntructs simulation experiments to verify the effectiveness of the new model. The experimental results show The new model can capture the complex relationship between demand-side variables, supply-side variables, and traffic flow, and also shows its value in estimating dynamic road capacity.
Professor Liu’s logical and simple explanation brings theaudience new research enlightenment. The teachers and students had an in-depth discussion and exchange ideas with Professor Liu on the research topic.
