Abstract:

Research into information and knowledge management is widespread, yet often premised on Western organisational and cultural norms, practices and experiences. However, the very different cultural norms, practices and experiences that pertain in other parts of the world, notably China, should also be considered. In this interpretive study, we consider evidence (including interviews, observations, documents, conversations, action plans) gathered in a number of private Chinese firms over the last five years to demonstrate how knowledge is sought and shared in a context that is both decentralised and informal. Following on from our findings, we propose a structural model that captures the richness of this context and is amenable to wider testing in China and beyond.
