Abstract:This paper provides a comprehensive account for workers’ fairness view in the co-working environment. Co-workers exhibit a surprisingly high degree of conformity with the equity norm and allocate the reward in proportion to each one’s workload, even though they know that the workloads are randomly determined. Our findings with laboratory participants hold when we replicate the experiment with online workers, using either within-subject or between-subject variation of workload. The strong and robust equity norm held by co-workers given exogenous workloads suggests that effort even when beyond one’s control, is the foundation of entitlement to reward.
