Title:The impact of retirement on healthcare utilization: Evidence from urban China
Presenter:Xintong Zhao
Abstract:
This study examines the causal impact of retirement on inpatient healthcare utilization among older adults in China using a claim data. Using a Regression Discontinuity Design to exploit the statutory retirement age in urban China as exogenous variation in retirement, we find a heterogenous retirement effect by disease categories. The results show that retirement leads to a reduction in hospitalization due to both communicable diseases and injuries, while increase the hospitalization risk due to chronic diseases. We also find substantial gender heterogeneity in the retirement effect, with a larger significant effect on chronic diseases and mental disorders induced hospitalization among males. Retirement has no effect on average hospitalization expenses of both genders. The results suggest that retirement results in changes in health seeking behavior other than health conditions.
