Abstract:

We study the long-term effects of a one-shot information intervention on efficient lighting through an online field experiment. We provide information on the private and social benefits of efficient light bulbs, and observe repeated purchasing decisions over ten months. Results show that information provision significantly increases willingness-to-pay (WTP) for efficient light bulbs in the short term.Environmental information slightly outperforms monetary one. The effect rapidly decays over time: already after three months treatment and control groups are indistinguishable. However, both groups show higher WTP than newly recruited subjects. Increased WTP correlates with updated beliefs. Our study sheds light on the short and long-term effect of information provision and inquiry-based learning.

Introduction

Dr. Gao Yu is an assistant professor in Guanghua School of Management, Peking University. She obtained her Ph.D. degree in behavioral economics at Erasmus University in the Netherlands. After her Ph.D., she worked at the Polytechnic University of Milan as a Postdoctoral researcher. She works on decisions over time and under uncertainty with the help of lab and field experiments. She is also interested in applying the insights from decision theory to help individuals make better decisions, such as to save for retirement, mitigate climate change, and so on.
