Abstract:
The information systems (IS) field has grown by developing theory through the extension of reference theories. In this study, we will investigate what constitutes theoretical contribution and examining how mid-range theoretical contribution in our flagship journals has evloved. To do so, we first discuss how mid-range theories can be categorized by drawing on an established theoretical contribution framework, which posits theory extension and theory application as its two dimensions. Second, we investigate the extent to which mid-range theories at different levels of theoretical contributions create research impacts by examining all the empirical articles published in the two top IS journals (MIS Quarterly and Information Systems Research) over a 23-year period (1990–2012). The analyses reveal interesting findings that largely confirm our theoretical predictions.
