The School of Economics and Management (SEM) of Beihang University was founded in 1956. It is among the earliest-established economic and management schools in science and engineering universities in China, boasting the largest number of ministerial and provincial key laboratories. As one of the first batch of eight schools nationwide accredited with the national key discipline of Management Science and Engineering, SEM is a key construction unit of the "211 Project", "985 Project" and "Double First-Class Initiative", and also a builder of the Beijing Higher Education Institution Precision and Advanced Innovation Center.

SEM currently houses 4 first-class disciplines, namely Management Science and Engineering, Applied Economics, Business Administration, and Statistics, with 9 academic departments, 7 doctoral programs and 1 postdoctoral research station. In the 2021 Discipline Evaluation, Management Science and Engineering was designated as a Peak Discipline. The school has fostered a coordinated disciplinary development ecosystem, led by Management Science and Engineering and supported by the interdisciplinary integration of Business Administration, Economics and Statistics.

The school has a strong faculty team consisting of 47 professors, 65 associate professors and 66 doctoral supervisors. Among the faculty members, there are high-level talents including 2 Innovation Research Groups supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 11 national-level talents, 4 chief scientists of key R&D programs, 1 recipient of the Nomination Award of the Chinese Young Scientist Award, 1 winner of the Fudan Premium Fund of Management, 2 Beijing Municipal Teaching Masters, 1 Beijing Municipal Model Teacher of Moral Conduct, 3 supervisors of National Excellent Doctoral Dissertations, 4 authors of National Excellent Doctoral Dissertations, and 5 Highly Cited Chinese Researchers. In recent years, the school has intensified efforts in talent introduction and cultivation, with a number of outstanding young and middle-aged academic talents graduating from top universities at home and abroad joining the faculty, becoming the backbone of teaching and research development.

Currently, the school has a total enrollment of 2,452 students, including 600 undergraduate students, 1,594 master's students and 258 doctoral students. SEM students have won numerous prestigious awards in various competitions, such as the Special Prize at the 16th "Challenge Cup" National College Students' Extracurricular Academic and Technological Works Competition (2019), the Special Prize, First Prize and Second Prize at the 6th, 8th, 9th and 10th National College Students Energy Economics Academic and Creative Competition (2020, 2022, 2023, 2024), the Outstanding Winner at the Mathematical Contest in Modeling (2018), the Champion at the 1st China "Internet Plus" College Students Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition (2015), the Gold Award at the "Create Youth" Capital College Students Entrepreneurship Competition (2013), and the First Prize at the Qualcomm Snapdragon National University Innovation Contest (2011). The school has cultivated a large number of excellent graduates, among whom 3 doctoral dissertations have been awarded National Excellent Doctoral Dissertations and 4 have received nominations, and 3 graduates have obtained the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. Many graduates have grown into leaders and key talents in fields such as aeronautics and astronautics, manufacturing, finance and information technology, playing an important role in promoting the construction of an innovative country.

SEM owns 6 ministerial and provincial-level teaching and research platforms, including the Ministry of Education's first batch of liberal arts laboratories—the Low-Carbon Governance and Policy Intelligence Laboratory, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology Key Laboratory of Data Intelligence and Smart Management, the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Complex System Analysis and Management Decision-Making, the Beijing Municipal Key Laboratory of Urban Operation Emergency Support Simulation Technology, the Beijing Higher Education Institution Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Innovation Economy and Smart Management, and the Beijing Higher Education Institution Demonstrative On-Campus Innovation Practice Base for Economics and Management. It has blazed a unique path of running a school through the integration of science and education. The "One Case, Two Practices" teaching model, centered on case teaching, experimental teaching and practical teaching, has yielded remarkable results. A total of 79 original cases have won National Excellent Management Case Awards, 16 have been awarded National Financial Master Teaching Case Competition Awards, and 15 have received National Accounting Master Professional Degree Excellent Teaching Case Awards. In 2010, the MBA program became one of the first batch of pilot units for the comprehensive reform of professional degree postgraduate education of the Ministry of Education, and in 2013, it was rated as Excellent in the acceptance inspection of the national MBA education comprehensive reform pilot program. In 2019, the school won the "Outstanding Educational Contribution Award for the 20th Anniversary of China's Project Management Development (1999-2019)".

By integrating interdisciplinary resources, the school continuously carries out innovative research on major frontier issues in economics and management as well as key issues related to national strategic needs, and has made continuous breakthroughs and original achievements. In recent years, the school has been approved 5 national key R&D program projects, 11 research topics, 1 basic science center project and 1 innovation group project. It has presided over 18 major and key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China and 3 major (key) international exchange and cooperation projects. Meanwhile, it has undertaken a large number of applied projects meeting the major needs of national economy. The annual research funding exceeds 50 million yuan, and the per capita research funding ranks among the top among similar schools in China. The school has formed a sustainable innovation capability and brand effect in both basic and applied research of economics and management.

The school implements an open school-running strategy and has gradually formed an all-round and multi-level international exchange pattern, with its international influence continuously improving. It has established cooperative relations with more than 20 renowned universities and research institutions around the world, including York University in Canada, carrying out extensive international exchanges and cooperation in student exchange, scientific research cooperation and faculty exchange. In 2014, it was approved as the Beijing Municipal Base for International Cooperation in Science and Technology, and in 2019, it was designated as the International Cooperation Demonstration School of Beihang University. The school has successfully hosted large-scale international conferences and forums such as the 15th International Academic Conference on Industrial Management, the Beihang Economics and Management International Forum, the Beihang International Young Scholars Weishi Forum, the International Conference on Computer and Industrial Engineering, the International Conference on Partial Least Squares and Related Methods, the International Conference on Value Engineering and Value Management, the International Symposium on Computational Traffic Science, and the Symposium on SPS Case Study Methods.
