Title：Congestion Delays and AirlineNetworks

Abstract:
Thispaper investigates the role of congestion delays in the network choice of amonopoly airline. By comparing a hub-and-spoke network (HS), point-to-pointnetwork (PP) and mixed network (MX), we find that, because of the inclusion ofcongestion delays, first, the total optimal flight frequency may be higherunder HS than PP and the optimal aircraft size is smaller under HS than PP;second, the airline may choose PP even when the extra travel time disutility ofone-stop services is relatively low; and third, welfare analysis shows theairline's inefficient biases towards PP.
